What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a several thousand years old Chinese medical treatment, one of the core parts of Traditional Chinese Medicine which also includes cupping (witness Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympic swimmer), herbal medicine, massage, and other treatment techniques.

Acupuncture advantages:

                        1. non toxic treatment, meaning no chemicals involved
                        2. does not lead to dependency of any kind
                        3. does not impact brain function like most pain killers do
                        4. negligible side effects
                        5. more convenient and less expensive than pain killers

These are the some of the reasons why acupuncture has been a treatment of choice for chronic pain and multiple other illnesses and injuries for centuries in many Asian countries (China, Korea, Japan...) and has been making inroads in North America as well.

This phenomena is evidenced not only by a quickly rising awareness of acupuncture treatment in many clinics, but also its acceptance by the largest Canadian and America insurance companies such as SunLife, ManuLife, Blue Cross, and many others. Great overview of acupuncture in Alberta can be found here.

In a nutshell, acupuncture involves insertion of very thin needles into body's "pressure points" whose location depends on the symptom(s) to be treated. If done properly, pain is either non-existent or minimal. One of the most thorough and relevant studies performed by the World Health Organization (WHO) concluded that acupuncture is very effective in treatment of arthritis, gout, muscle spasms, and many other health conditions. You can download the entire WHO study (PDF) here.

Given the above mentioned advantages of acupuncture it is not suprising that is quickly becoming a treatment of choice for ever increasing number of Canadians.

It is really important to understand that while acupuncture has been used for thousands of years, it is by no means a simple technique and requires not only years of professional training (ask if your practitioner has a degree from accredited, preferably Chinese, university) but also many years of hands on practice to be practiced painlessly, safely and efficiently.

This is where Ms. Zhang comes in as she is one of the most experienced acupuncture practitioners in Canada as evidenced by her long and distinguished acupuncture career spanning over 25 years and multitude of awards she had received. To read more about Ms. Zhang please click here.
